What is Hyaluronic Acid?

There are lots of different skincare ingredients out there, and we know it can get confusing!

Today, we’ll be looking at hyaluronic acid. This beauty must-have is beloved by skincare experts and there are several different ways you can use it. We’ll discuss what hyaluronic acid is, what benefits it can have for your skin, and why we use it in our collagen boosting Maxerum serum.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally by the body. Although it has acid in the name, it’s actually a powerfully hydrating fluid, responsible for helping moisture reach the surface of the skin and keeping it hydrated and supple. It works by acting as a magnet for moisture, and just one gram of hyaluronic acid can hold an incredible six litres of water!

Our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid, but there are lots of factors that can cause our levels to drop. One of these factors, unfortunately, is age. Like our natural supply of collagen, our natural supply of hyaluronic acid decreases over time - and, as hydrated skin doesn’t show wrinkles or fine lines as much as dry skin, this can have a visible impact on our faces, making us appear older and more tired.

How should you use hyaluronic acid?

There are lots of topical skincare products out there containing hyaluronic acid, including our own collagen boosting serum, Maxerum. It’s really simple to apply Maxerum - just cleanse your face as normal, and apply to damp skin. Allow to dry, then follow with your other skincare products.

But what about ingesting hyaluronic acid - can you take it as a supplement?

At Absolute Collagen, we keep things simple - that’s why our award-winning collagen drink is just premium hydrolysed collagen, essential Vitamin C - and nothing else. However, some collagen supplements also contain hyaluronic acid, and sometimes we get asked why we don’t include it in ours. That’s a fair question, and the answer is that we always follow the science. There simply hasn’t been enough scientific research into the effects of ingesting hyaluronic acid for us to be confident including it in our collagen drink.

Plus, it’s not essential; Vitamin C is essential for getting the most out of your collagen supplement, which is why we include it - but collagen is our hero ingredient, and we’re proud to keep it that way. We developed Absolute Collagen and Maxerum to be the perfect partnership of a supplement and a topical serum, and we’ve got lots of happy Absoluters who love using them both together.

When should you use hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and can be used every day and by people of any age.

Its gentle hydration means that unlike many other acids, which strip the skin of moisture, it actually works to prevent dehydrated skin, so it works well for those prone to dry skin. It’s also good for people with oily skin, however, as it hydrates without making the skin greasy.

We’ve formulated our award-winning Maxerum serum to be used twice a day, both morning and night. Hyaluronic acid is one of our four powerhouse ingredients, alongside bakuchiol - a gentle alternative to retinol that can be used day and night - plus Matrixyl 3000 - which counteracts photoaging of the skin - and Matrixyl Synthe 6 - which increases fibroblast productivity to smooth wrinkles and fine lines.

Maxerum is clinically proven to reduce wrinkles by 18% and boost skin firmness by 28% in just 28 days when used twice daily.

Try Maxerum and Absolute Collagen for yourself and feel your absolute best with our powerhouse products.
